Anyone here ever towed with their Vic/Marquis. I have 2003 Grand marquis LSE (cargo coils installed) and I am looking to tow a boat of about 1000 to 1200 lbs(trailer and motor included). I know the capacity is 2000 but info I have gathered from other sites says most people upgrade the tranny cooler.
I fail to see how the capacity went from 5000lb to 2000lb. I would have to assume thats a tranny issue because my cousins ranger with a 4.0 is rated to 5800lbs and the Vic used to be 5000. I'm going to turn OD of to avoid tranny shifting. Any info or experience would be appreciated. Thanks, Matt. |

Stiffer rear springs-larger tranny cooler and brakes affect the towing capacity.
Add an external Trans oil cooler would be the first step.

1000 pounds should require no mods when you're bringing a supporting axle into the picture. with a tongue weight of ~100 pounds, I think your springs will be fine. Oil cooler would be good if heading for the mountains.
My 2007 CV manual says 1500 pound towing limit... I dunno what's with the light ratings from Ford. wanna sell you a truck maybe? weak link must be the trans. I guess additional cooling never hurt any automatic... I used to tow a 1500 pound boat with a Hyundai Accent with no mods. Last edited by whywhyzed; 03-11-2010 at 04:43 PM. |

For 1500 lb, your right no mods should be required.
If you add the weight of the cottage generator, people and luggage in the boat etc. then a cooler should help protect your trans.

which cooler line should a supplementary cooler plumb into?
does it matter if it is before the factory cooler or after? |

i,m guessing you are going to mount your new cooler in front of the original and still keep the original in service if this is the case the line on top going into your stock cooler is the feed line so you would want to tap into the lower one and feed that into new cooler and then out from the new cooler and connect back to the return line now you have two tranny coolers working for you

thanks - yes, I think for a winter driven car, I'd be best to keep the rad cooler in the loop for cold morning warming of the atf...

Usually after the oem cooler.in the return line to the transmission.
You need to know the flow direction. Usually the return is the bottom one. and the cooler should be mounted in front of the rad. If you mount it in the supply line to the OEM cooler the rad just reheats the oil and the benefit goes to the engine.

I towed 3500 lbs with a class 1 hitch on a 4 cyl automatic 98 contour over 2000 km's to Newfoundland through some pretty nasty hills and up kellys mountain at full throttle
when I got here the fluid wasn't even burnt.. lol but the pump on the tranny went about 4 months later though...wonder if it was related the tires on the trailer were at 50 psi yet still looked flat and the springs were bowed over the wrong way hahahaI think the Vic can take it! |
